SEAL OBSERVATION FACILITIES PROJECT
LOCATION: St. Paul Island, Alaska TYPE OF CONSTRUCTION: Wood Frame St. Paul Island, AK is located in the middle of the Bering Sea and is home to the largest breeding colonies of the Northern Fur Seal. NOAA and their agencies have monitored the fur seal population on St. Paul since 1911, using a series of 50 plus towers and walkways to observe and count the population during the summer months. Most of the wood structures are in poor condition and no longer safe for use.
WPC completed a contract that replaced seven towers and about 1,000 feet of walkways on the Reef Rookery located on the southern end of St Paul Island. The new structures are made of Fiberglass Reinforced Polymers or FRP and natural Alaskan Cedar.
WPC’s work could only take place during extremely cold winter months when the seals migrated to sea. This coupled with the remote location of the island, created logistical challenges. However, WPC worked extensively with the Aleut Tribal Government on St Paul Island and NOAA staff to plan the construction process. The success of this difficult project illustrates WPC’s commitment to providing “Best in Class” service and building strong relationships and partnerships.
“I have worked with a lot of contractors over the years, and I can honestly say that Wade Perrow Construction is one of the best I have worked with. I can count on and trust WPC to do a quality job, especially on projects located in remote locations like St. Paul Island, AK. I look forward to working with them on future projects.” -Robb Gries,
